Elsa's Kopje has two famous names - the first for the lioness returned to the wild in Meru of George and Joy Adamson's story of "Born Free". The second not necessarily because of the name, more because Elsa used to frequent this area during her life time with Joy.

In fitting with this legacy, Elsa's Kopje lodge is aesthetically pleasing, a balm to the eye in an otherwise interesting but arid area.

Kopje (meaning hill in Afrikaans), by the way, is for the rocky outcropping the lodge sits on.

From your cottage, tucked into the rocks and forms of the hill, enjoy a 270 degree view of this beautiful, wild park.

The landscape and vegetation is fascinating, tracing the lines of ancient landforms created by the series of lava flows off the Nyambeni Hills towards the Tana River many millions of years ago.

The different soil ages have created distinct patterns of vegetation from lush thick bush to sparse arid sections, a unique and eyecatching eco-system now crisscrossed by 13 tree lined rivers.

The Lodge is located within little known and therefore not crowded Meru National Park - northeast of Nairobi (7 miles north of the Equator) - Access by road or charter flight. Here you will experience hot days and cool pleasant nights in one of the 8 stone and thatched cottages- 2 with twin beds, 6 with king-sized beds. There is a swimming pool and a Gift shop. The nearest airstrip is at Mughwango Hill (at camp)
